Why Aren't Video Games Fun Anymore?

What a sad state of affairs. I read the newspaper this morning and there was this article about a little boy who physically couldn’t have fun. Nothing was inhibiting him, he just wasn’t a very interesting person. That was 20 years ago. This is that little boy now. Feel old yet?

  • I need someone to reply to this, I play a specific gun game (wont say it cuz of privacy reasons) but the point being is that I want to get better at it but I keep on dying which results into no motivation to play it again, but I still want to play it cuz my favorite kind of games are gun games but when I play it I die and its not fun. What should I do?? Someone please reply to this, I need an answer, I want to play it but not want to play it, I keep on spiraling thinking what should I do 🙁

  • You should look up the term skinner box and figure out for yourself if the fun you lost might not even have been fun in the first place… For me a skinner box never worked as I was never all to much into the grinding aspect of things. Therefore I ask myself if I play this for the next 2h will I see anything different if yes, I play it. If I don't see anything change and the game stays absolutely the same for the next hundreds of hours I'm not playing it. As for playing with a friend, it's mostly the interaction with the friend that makes the game fun. So a fighting game becomes a tool to engage with a friend. Most of those games are pretty boring once played alone.

  • I felt the same man until I jumped back into Witcher 3 and remembered why I play video games in the first place (can't even put it in context)

  • I'm 19 about to hit 20 and I used to spend all my time inside playing video games. Like I refused to go outside and hang out in the real world. Video games were just my life for the majority of it up until my junior year of Highschool where I suddenly lost my passion for playing video games and moved onto the real world and hanging out with people. Since then I find myself playing video games to make time go by faster without any real enjoyment.

  • Nowadays i could barely stand playing any game for more than 30 minutes, i even tried hard to figure out what's so special about AAA games. Nothing but visuals and maybe stories that got me thinking "wouldn't i rather watch a film?". It's painful considering how games used to be something i worshipped in the past.

I see my PS4, and get the urge to play, so I play…and 10 minutes in, I don't care.

  • Because we treat video games more like gambling and less like games for one. Two, just like slot machines they're all basically the same but with some different bells and whistles. Three, the difficulty you get is either call of duty or dark souls (there's no in-between.). Four, there's too many people telling you what to make nowadays thus destroying any creative process that you might have. Yeah, we have the underground and the indie scene, but the fact is unique and different will never quite have the spotlight it once had on the mainstream eyes.

  • Anyone else feel like online gaming is so bad? And games that people say are soooo good aren’t that good to you? I tried out the Witcher 3 and horizon Zero dawn and my god I got bored within like a couple of hours in. I liked red dead redemption 2 but it didn’t amaze me or anything. The only games I played that I loved story wise in the past 10 years were the last of us and god of war. That’s literally it. For multiplayer the last game that I put all my time in was black ops 2. Other than that my love for video games just became blah and boring. Kinda depressing

  • 'Rapid Decline in Engagement' oh how accurate this was. Now that Jimquistion and others have raised awareness about games many years later and youtube and other social media now in 2020 being just about only how many hours you engage a product. be it positive or negative it doesn't matter. All that matters is the engagement. Fun and other values don't matter at all. And people are quite exhausted with that. And it will continue to become worse but i guess as long as there is so much stuff to choose from we are good. Requires just more time not playing vidya and doing something completely different.

  • Just had this realization when I picked up Death Stranding. I played many hours a day for like 2 weeks, and I'm still only halfway through. Then I took a break for like a week, came back to it, and I just can't get back into it. Kind of a bummer…
